Pilates is great for core work, flexibility, and general mobility. The moves are TOUGH. It should be supplemental to your main work if you really want to "get in shape" though--it doesn't burn enough calories to change your calorie balance much. Walking, Heavyhands, Running (if you're in good enough shape), Circuit Weight Training, Shovelglove, Intervals/Sprinting (Tabata, HIIT), will reverse your calorie balance much faster. The point is--use Pilates in context with your overall program, not as the backbone. JMO from clients who have worked with me--they noticed a lot faster changes once they added some cardiovascular/weight training work with their Pilates.
